Description: Upper Dolpo is a remote and restricted trekking region that represents the true wilderness of the Himalayas. Located beyond the main Himalayan range, its rugged, arid landscape resembles the Tibetan plateau. This area is a true journey back in time, offering untouched Bon-po and Buddhist cultures, ancient monasteries, and some of Nepal's most challenging and rewarding high-altitude trails.
History & Significance
Dolpo has historically been a remote and isolated kingdom with strong cultural and trade ties to Tibet. Its remoteness and high-altitude terrain have preserved its unique way of life and its ancient religious practices. Designated as a restricted area to protect its fragile ecosystem and culture, it offers a glimpse into a world that has changed little over the centuries.
Key Features
- **Shey Phoksundo National Park**, Nepal's largest national park, which encompasses much of the region.
- Ancient **Bon-po and Buddhist monasteries**, including the sacred Shey Gompa (Crystal Monastery).
- High mountain passes like the **Kang La Pass** (5,150 m) and Saldang La Pass, which offer breathtaking views.
- An incredible sense of solitude and untouched wilderness, with sightings of rare wildlife like the **snow leopard**.
Activities & Experiences
- Undertaking a multi-week, fully-supported camping trek to experience the true wilderness.
- Visiting the traditional villages of the Dolpo-pa people and observing their unique lifestyle.
- Exploring the ancient monasteries and Chortens (Tibetan stupas).
- Passing through arid, moon-like landscapes that are a stark contrast to the rest of Nepal.
Best Time to Visit
Due to the high altitude and the challenging passes, the trekking season is limited to the warmer months. The best time to visit is from late April to October, with May and September being the prime months. It is inaccessible during the winter due to heavy snow and impassable passes.
