Description: Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a unique protected area in the Terai region, known for its status as a premier birdwatching destination. Its extensive wetlands are a haven for over 450 species of birds, and it is also home to the last remaining population of wild water buffalo in Nepal.
History & Significance
Established in 1976, Koshi Tappu was created to protect the endangered wild water buffalo (Arna). It was later designated as a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance, due to its critical role as a habitat for resident and migratory birds. The reserve is a crucial stopover point for birds migrating along the major flyway between Asia and Europe.
