According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva created Gosainkunda when he pierced a glacier with his trident to draw water, after swallowing a poison to save the world. It is believed that the lake is a holy confluence of various divine powers. Thousands of pilgrims visit the lake annually, especially during the full moon festival of Janai Purnima in August, to take a holy dip in its waters.
