Lhosar (लोछार)

Description: Lhosar is the New Year festival celebrated by different Himalayan communities in Nepal such as Tamang, Sherpa, Gurung, and others. The word “Lhosar” means “New Year.”

History & Cultural Significance

Lhosar is celebrated with great joy as it marks the beginning of a new year according to the lunar calendar. Each community (Tamang, Gurung, Sherpa) celebrates Lhosar on different dates — Sonam Lhosar, Tamu Lhosar, and Gyalpo Lhosar. It is a time for family gatherings, prayers, traditional dances, and cultural rituals.
